“Wear Red” for American Heart Month

Join the Park Church Women’s Ministry on Sunday, February 13th, as we “Wear Red” in
observance of American Heart Month.

In the United States, heart disease causes 1 out of every 4 deaths.

In addition to being the leading cause of death in America, cardiovascular disease also creates higher risks in other medical conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and even COVID-19. It’s important that individuals understand the common risk factors for heart disease. Your lifestyle can significantly increase your risk for heart disease. Things such as:

  • Eating a diet high in saturated fats, trans fat, and cholesterol is linked to atherosclerosis.
  • Too much salt (sodium) in the diet can raise blood pressure.
  • Not getting enough physical activity increase the chances of developing other medical conditions.
  • Tobacco use increases the risk for heart attack.

About half of all Americans (47%) have at least 1 of these key risk factors.

Read Go Red for Women’s “The Facts about Women and Heart Disease” article for more health insights.

Cancelled: MLK Day of Service: Samaritan’s Feet

Out of safety concerns due to the inclement weather, Samaritan’s Feet International headquarters has decided to cancel Monday’s service event. There are two other volunteer opportunities with this organization later this week:

  • Thursday, January 20th from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Friday, January 21st from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.

All attendees are welcome to come and go as your schedules allow.

From Samaritan’s Feet:

Volunteers will have the opportunity to help us sort shoes in our warehouse. There will be a short orientation on safety guidelines and warehouse job description. We kindly ask that you arrive 15 minutes early and follow check in procedures. Per CDC guidelines, volunteers who provide proof of COVID vaccination may serve with us without a mask. If you choose to keep your vaccination status private or have not been vaccinated, you may serve with us while wearing a face covering. If you are not comfortable serving in a public, though restricted, situation, we welcome your support of Samaritan’s Feet in other ways.

Please make sure to read our Volunteer Safety Guidelines before your visit, so you can be prepared. We encourage our warehouse volunteers to bring a new pair of athletic shoes or to donate $25.00 per volunteer to help us support our mission. Safety Guidelines can be found here: https://www.samaritansfeet.org/get-involved/volunteer-in-our-warehouse/

We are located at 4808 Chesapeake Drive. Upon arriving and entering the security gate, parking is immediately on the left. Follow our sidewalk to the front of the building until the very last door. We’ll be taking temperatures at the door before entering, and we ask everyone to wear a mask and to dress comfortably.”

Fresh Start: 21-Day Church-Wide Fast

As we prepare for a new year, it can be quite tempting to create plans for ourselves, and then ask God to bless them.  What if our sole plan was to seek our heavenly Father for His plans concerning us? Can you imagine what the year would be if we simply committed the first three weeks to fasting, praying and asking the Lord to mature us, spiritually, emotionally and socially? Through A Fresh Start, we’ll bring in the new year with a time of fasting and prayer.

Fasting and Prayer combined can bring transformational revival in you, the nation and the world. The ultimate purpose of the fast is not you and what you seek, but God and what He seeks. Fasting is a true way to sacrifice for God and humble yourself to Him. Fasting is an act of worship and honoring.

Types of Fasts:

  • Partial Fast: abstain from food for a set time; eat a simple meal of bread & water; sacrifice a certain food.
  • Daniel Fast: abstain from delicacies, meats and wines, and focuses on fresh foods such as fruits and vegetables.
  • No Food Fast: abstain from all food, including milk (protein) and only drink liquids and water.
  • Water-only Fast: abstain from everything except water.
  • Absolute/Supernatural Fast: abstain from any foods or liquids, including water (the 40-day fast of Moses and Jesus and the 3-day fast seen in Esther 4:16)

While fasting is great way to seek God, and to remove all the things in our lives that often take the place of primary in our lives, we certainly want you to take all the precautions to make sure you are safe. If you have severe medical maladies, you should request professional supervision while fasting.

The best way to choose the appropriate fast is to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit. Pray purposefully in identifying God’s purpose and direction in your fast.
